a470

The A470 runs from Cardiff in the South of Wales to Llandudno in the north of the country, a distance of approximately 300 km. Prior to the mid- 1970’s the route that the A470 follows was designated as a number of different trunk and minor roads. This chequered history is evident in the manner in which the road zigzags through the country side, at times causing travellers to question which road they are on. The nature of the road changes from dual carriage way in the South, through single carriage way for much of its length, to single track at some points along the way.

Using the A470 as a conduit for discovery this project aims to investigate the myriad of uses that mankind has utilised the landscape for. As voyage of discovery all manner of uses were be found; from industrial to residential and commercial to social. The various uses encountered span the years from the 13th century Conway castle in the north to modern wind farms throughout Mid-Wales. Cardiff Bay boasts Victorian and modern buildings all within a few yards of each other. The people who have lived along the length of the road across the years have, and continue to, put their mark on the landscape.
